We lost another Jefferson Cousin, Evelyn Barger

My friend and fellow Jefferson researcher, Herbert Barger has lost his wife. Our prayers go out to him and his family.

Evelyn Dorothy Lee Bomar Barger
(December 6, 1930 – November 9, 2009)

Evelyn Barger died peacefully with her family at her side at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. on Monday, November 9, 2009 at age 78.Evelyn was born on December 6, 1930 in Knoxville, Tenn. She married Herbert and they were married for 61 years and she enjoyed being a military wife. She was deeply involved with her Providence-Fort Washington United Methodist Church and assisted with various church functions and activities for more than 40 years. She was always giving and putting others above herself.

She was a member of the Washington D.C. Constitution Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and served that association as Registrar and Treasurer for many years.

She was a collateral descendant of Thomas Jefferson and co-authored, with her husband, Herbert, the family genealogy book, “The Jefferson Family of Virginia.”

Her greatest joy in life was being a wife, mother and grandma. She is survived by her husband, Herbert Barger, Fort Washington, MD. Other survivors include their four children: Linda F. Patterson, husband Jim, San Antonio, TX, Pamela A. Buell, husband Frank, Ashburn, VA, Harold L. Barger, wife Carol, Waldorf, MD, Rebecca K. Hart, husband Mike, Ashburn, VA.

Her grandchildren were her most precious gems. They include 9 grandchildren, James, Justin and Jeffrey Patterson, Jessica Jones and Sarah Buell, Jennifer Johnson and Johanna Barger, and Rachel and Emily Hart. Her great-grandsons are Matthew Benny and Alexander James Patterson.

In lieu of flowers, donations or memorial contributions may be sent to Providence-Fort Washington United Methodist Church, 10610 Old Fort Road, Fort Washington, MD 20744.

A private burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

Regarding the Browns, we were visiting Prestworld, a large plantation open for visitors near Clarksville, Va. on Lake Gaston. The docent there told us that a lady named Brown was visiting and was making a large donation for the upkeep of Prestworld and she told this lady we were Jefferson related. She was about 80 I supposee and as we were upstairs on the tour she climbed the long statirs and asked our guide, “where are those Jefferson relations?” We talked for awhile but I never got her lineage, but she was very interisting to talk with.

(We wish you had run into Clara but she is much younger and I am sorry to say, not a rich as the lady you saw.)

We also had another interesting meeting with a Jefferson cousin, Grace Jamieson  who together with he husband owned, at that time, the famous historical plantation, Berkeley Plantation on the James River, south of Richmond. She and her husband, Malcolm, have since passed on and their son runs it. She descended from Peterfield’s brother, George, while my wife, Evelyn, descends from their brother John Robertson Jefferson.

Herbert and I were researching the Jeffersons in the 1980s.  He was involved with the Jefferson DNA study.  We do not believe that President Jefferson fathered any of Sally Hemming’s children.  There were a group of 8 Jefferson relatives that lived near Monticello and the historical evidence points that Randolph Jefferson (brother to the President) was the father of Eston Hemings.

President Thomas Jefferson and how we are related!

I got a phone call from Clara daughter of Mary Brown Randolph!  She is visiting Monticello!!!!  I am sure that she was curious how we are related to the President.  (Someday I will be able to insert ancestor charts for your viewing pleasure.) We are all related to Mary Frances Young Crawford.  She is the mother of Clara Crawford Brown and Iva Crawford Ward Smith

President Thomas Jefferson is our first cousin.  His grandfather was Capt. Thomas Jefferson (1676-1731).  Capt Thomas and Mary Field had two sons (plus other children) Col. Peter Jefferson (father of the president) and Field Jefferson (ours).  So Clara if you can see this as you travel, you are the First Cousin 7 times removed to the President. (We are first cousins because we share the same grandparents. We are 7 generations apart (removed) from the President)

Jefferson brothers Harry Byrd and Carroll of Virginia

I have a lot of memories there.  I first recall his store in 1962, when we moved to Sandy Level.  He had lots of general merchandise and two gas pumps outside where full-service was always provided.  He also had two small (6ft) pool tables in the back room where I learned how to play the game.  Carroll had the old soda machines in the early 60s where you had to put a nickel in the coke machine (lift top type) and slide the bottle around till you pulled it out near the front of the machine.  The two benches out front got a lot of use too.  I recall several of us sitting out on the bench one summer, including the county Sheriff.  While there, a car came up Rt 40 doing about 100 MPH.   

That’s about it for now on the store.  The store is being used to sell antiques these days, called the Sandy Level Trading Post.  (Click on Comments for the rest of the story!)

Family of William Brown 1920 Grays Harbor WA

This is the census record of Mary Brown and her brothers and sisters.  I tried to in-large the image and save it to a disk but I was not successful.  Should I print the record then scan it?  Any ideas will help. Thanks.

Peterfield Jefferson descendants in Pittsylvania Co VA

The name Jefferson belongs to this particular area – Jeffersons have owned land here for 200 years and until some 30-35 years ago there was a railroad station here called the J & P (Jefferson and Pittsylvania)

Gong back 200 years in Pittsylvania County (Virginia) history, we find that George Jefferson son of Field Jefferson patented large bodies of land in Pittsylvania Co, part of which he sold to his brother Peterfield Jefferson (our ancestor) (Field Jefferson was the uncle to President Thomas Jefferson.)

After Peterfield Jefferson purchased land from his brother (George), he moved to Pittsylvania Count near Turkey Cock Creek.  His children were: Field, John, Samuel Allen, Alexander (ours), Archer, Thomas and Judith. 

Few other families claim the distinction of having settled and remained around Pigg River for almost as long as the Jefferson.  Pigg River and Frying Pan Creek to the East

The home of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Jefferson belonged, some 60-70 years ago to a cousin, I. T. Jefferson who is buried in the old Jefferson cemetery on the farm now (1967) owned by Dr. Mease.  The original house had three rooms downstairs and two upstairs.  The kitchen removed some years ago, had dirt floor and a wide fireplace.  The rafters (sleepers) were exposed, the walls were fitted with rough planks of odd sizes and floors were covered with wide pine boards.
